Historic Mission San Gabriel Arcángel
Founded in 1771 as the fourth of California's Spanish missions, the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel's current church building was completed in 1805 and reopened in 2023 after restoration.
Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was established on September 8, 1771, by Fray Ángel Fernández de la Somera and Fray Pedro Benito Cambón. Originally built in its current location near the San Gabriel River, the mission was relocated five miles north in 1776 after a severe flood destroyed much of the complex. Between 1771 and 1834, the mission performed over 25,000 baptisms, more than any other mission in the California chain.
The mission's current church structure, completed in 1805, features distinctive architecture with capped buttresses, tall narrow windows, and a six-bell tower installed after the 1812 San Juan Capistrano earthquake damaged the original structure. The building reflects the work of restoration efforts begun by the Claretian Missionaries in 1908 and continuing through recent years. Following a fire that damaged the roof in July 2020, the mission completed its most recent restoration and reopened to the public in July 2023.
